Crosswalk Request, East Main Street, Court to Tanner
A request has been made to install a crosswalk on East Main Street between Court Street and Tanner Street. An analysis of pedestrian use, sight distance, safety considerations, and proximity of other crosswalks has produced the conclusion that a crosswalk is justified in this area. My opinion is that the best location for the crosswalk would be in front of 247 East Main, just west of Whites Alley. This location is preferred for the following reasons:
- The location is a sufficient distance from existing crosswalks at Court and Tanner (guidelines state 300 feet from other crosswalks)
- Stopping sight distance is adequate for eastbound and westbound Main Street approaches
- The location would provide a logical crossing point for the primary pedestrian generators
- The location would have the least impact on existing on-street parking, utilizing clearance provided by entrances
If a crosswalk is installed at this location, I anticipate a loss of four on-street parking spaces to provide crosswalk clearance and adequate sight distance for the pedestrians. The spaces would be the first two spaces on the north side of East Main, west of Whites Alley (directly in front of 247 E. Main); and the first two spaces on the south side of East Main, east of the lot at 230 E. Main. Because on-street parking is highly desired by business and residential, I would like to solicit feedback from the potentially impacted property owners. I am asking for your feedback on the crosswalk and associated loss of parking spaces. Please contact me by phone, by mail, or by email within three weeks of the date of this letter if you wish to comment. I will review any feedback and make a recommendation to the Town Manager.
Thank you for your consideration and input.
Sincerely,
John B. Dew, P.E.
